Abstract

End-of-winter snow depth and average snow density from area A, B, C and D, which include 1000's of point depth measurement located between ~20 and ~50 cm apart. The data was originally provided in excel workbooks, these files have been preserved within the zip “OriginalFiles”. The files were transformed for archiving with images pulled out into jpegs and data preserved as csv files. Some functions, features, and formatting was lost during the transformation. Missing data was defined with blank cells. Additional documentation can be found in files labelled with readme.csv and information.csv file endings.

The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska.

Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).

Methodology
The depth measurements were made using a GPS snow depth probe (http://www.snowhydro.com/products/column2.html). The corner coordinates of the entire domain were determined using a differential GPS (DGPS) by Ulrich. In the field, the exact location of the start- and end of respective transect was determined using a measurement tape that was laid out between the south (and north) grid corners. The coordinates derived from individual GPS snow probe measurements were then post-processed by applying the average offset of the x- and y locations at respective transect's start- and end point (in order to produce refined coordinates of individual points).
